Tetrahydrocurcumin What is it?
Compared to common turmeric extracts, Tetrahydrocurcuminoids are characterized by greater bioavailability, better stability and dosage efficiency. Available in white powder form, they do not stain and guarantee greater formulation versatility and very high absorption.
The use of Curcuma longa rhizomes has its origins in Ayurvedic medicine which has recognized its important antioxidant properties since ancient times, useful in the prevention of osteoarticular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases.
The beneficial properties associated with the Curcuma Longa species are directly related to its active compounds represented by curcuminoids , a group of natural phenolics responsible for the typical intense yellow colour, among which curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin stand out in particular.
Superior Antioxidant Capacity:
Compared to curcumin , tetrahydrocurcumin has a greater ability to neutralize free radicals , unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to several diseases.
Its chemical structure gives tetrahydrocurcumin better stability and bioavailability than curcumin, allowing it to perform a more effective antioxidant action within the body.
Potential benefits:
Protection against oxidative stress : Tetrahydrocurcumin may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, helping to reduce the risk of oxidative stress-related diseases such as premature aging , atherosclerosis , and some types of cancer .
Anti-inflammatory action: The antioxidant activity of tetrahydrocurcumin can also help reduce inflammation, a key factor in several pathologies.
Nervous System Protection : Tetrahydrocurcumin has demonstrated potential in protecting nervous system cells from damage caused by free radicals, offering possible neurological health benefits.
Recently, scientific research has highlighted how the hydrogenated derivatives of these compounds, called tetrahydrocurcuminoids (THCs), are biologically more effective than their precursors. Among their main effects we find:
- Greater antioxidant power – in vitro studies highlight how Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) exerts a more intense radical scavenging activity than curcumin;
- Better treatment of inflammatory symptoms – in some studies on animal models Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) showed a greater reduction in tissue levels of pro-inflammatory mediators (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and PGE2) and better selectivity in the suppression of COX-2 expression compared to COX-1, compared to curcumin;
- Superior control of the key factors of metabolic syndrome – studies on animal models highlight a greater protective effect of Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) on the symptoms of type 2 diabetes, such as glycemia and insulinemia. The administration of THCs also reduced the serum levels of total lipids, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and at the same time increased the levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in an experimental model of diabetic rats.
Features and indications for use
The Tetrahydrocurcuminoids from Curcuma Longa present in this supplement contain no less than 95% tetrahydrocurcuminoids in the forms of tetrahydrocurcumin (THC), tetrahydrodemethoxycurcumin (THDMC) and tetrahydrobisdemethoxycurcumin (THBDMC).
Tetrahydrocurcumin comes in the form of a tasteless white powder, therefore, it does not stain and offers the possibility of increased absorption compared to classic turmeric extracts.
Tetrahydrocurcuminoids from Curcuma longa are deemed safe by EFSA and authorized as Novel Food with a maximum daily dosage of 140 mg.
Difference between Curcumin and Tetrahydrocurcumin
Curcumin:
- Main active ingredient of turmeric
- Limited bioavailability
- More difficult absorption
- Rapidly metabolised in the body
Tetrahydrocurcumin:
- Curcumin metabolite
- Higher bioavailability
- Better absorption
- More stable in the body
Benefits:
- Both have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties.
- Tetrahydrocurcumin may be more effective than curcumin for some conditions, such as cancer and Alzheimer's.
Side effects:
- Both are generally considered safe.
- Tetrahydrocurcumin may cause fewer digestive side effects than curcumin.
Dosage:
- The dosage of both compounds varies depending on the condition you are treating.
- In general, tetrahydrocurcumin is needed in much lower doses than curcumin.
Interactions:
- Both can interact with some medications.
- It is important to consult your doctor before taking any of these compounds if you are taking other medications.
In summary:
- Tetrahydrocurcumin is a metabolite of curcumin with better bioavailability and better absorption.
- It may be more effective than curcumin for some conditions.
Other aspects to consider:
- Turmeric is a spice that can be used in cooking to add flavor and color to dishes.
- Curcumin is the extract, the active ingredient of Turmeric
- Tetrahydrocurcumin is a more concentrated compound found in very few dietary supplements.
- It is important to choose high-quality supplements from a reliable manufacturer.
Synergy of the other components:
The other components present in this supplement are all medical herbs with strong antioxidant power.
Silymarin from Milk Thistle in synergy with Rosemary is useful for strengthening liver and digestive function.
The dry extract of olive leaves in synergy with Milk Thistle facilitates carbohydrate metabolism.
The dry extract of grapes promotes the functioning of the microcirculation and counteracts the feeling of heaviness in the limbs (legs and arms).
